January 2013 Update

Extending Digital Practice between cultural organisations and schools

Artswork is delighted to announce investment in the two successful Extending Digital Practice programmes, each receiving £10,000 from the South East Bridge. These programmes see cultural organisations and clusters of schools benefiting from the opportunities digital technology has to offer and researching and developing new ways of working together. The programmes will inform practice and Artswork will keep you updated on their learning and approach.

The John Hansard Gallery, in partnership with image-maker Kristianne Drake and Southampton Solent University, will develop an action-research programme with a cluster of Teaching Schools and Alliance Schools in Southampton that will enable young people to explore digital image making. Embedding the Bronze Arts Award, the programme aims to support schools teaching GCSE Photography. The lead cluster/Teaching School, Hounsdown School, is developing an Arts Award programme alongside its new GCSE Photography in the 2013/2014 academic year.

Creative Junction working in partnership with Modern Art Oxford, Oxford Contemporary Music, The Roald Dahl Museum (Great Missenden) and Futurelab, will work with local schools to further develop the notion of 'an artist not in residence.' Young people and teachers will connect virtually to learn with professional artists and arts & cultural organisations working in their own studio/gallery/museum. Participating schools will share practice and outcomes through digital methodologies. The focus of this research explores how digital-based learning can enable cultural organisations and artists to deliver curriculum needs and build relevant virtual resources for schools.

Understanding the regional picture

Artswork, as part of the South East Bridge role, has commissioned research into understanding more about arts and cultural engagement in schools across the region. The findings will be shared with other organisations to assist their thinking and help Artswork’s strategic planning. The research will identify and analyse low engagement and highlight both successes and challenges relating to schools’ participation in culture. This learning will help to inform SE Bridge plans to enhance access to arts and culture for children and young people as well as be of value to many others in the delivery of this work.

School trips to museums in the region are already collated on an annual basis, enabling a good understanding of changing trends over the last 8 years - informing investment from ACE and DfE and our own planning and delivery. Aware of the concerns about school visits to cultural venues, Artswork is interested in understanding if it is possible to build up similar knowledge about visits to other cultural locations. We have commissioned a feasibility study to liaise with the organisations over how it is possible and the simplest and most effective way to gather such information.

We also welcome Mac Ince to the team as Data Research Administrator, Mac will be working part-time to correlate, coordinate and share regional data.

Artsmark Application News and Hints

Trinity College have announced that the Artsmark online application form will be available in late January. However, don’t wait until then, as registering your school now means you can access the Artsmark Network and get all the benefits of the online Artsmark Community.

School-to-School Mentors

Artswork, SE Bridge organisation, is in the process of appointing  4 schools in the West of our region as Artsmark School-to-School Mentors. The awarded schools who have all achieved Artsmark Gold four times will support other schools in their local area to apply for Artsmark and build networks and partnerships between schools, local arts and cultural organisations and artists.

Current plans include hosting 3 twilight sessions to support local primary clusters and secondary partners. These sessions include the chance to work with local arts professionals to develop  skills and explore ways of using these artists in school to work with staff and pupils. All great evidence to support Artsmark applications.

We are now looking for 4 schools from the East of our region - from Kent, Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, Brighton and Hove -  to become Artsmark School to School Mentors. So, if you have been awarded Artsmark Gold four times and are interested leading this work in your area then contact
