Artswork last week hosted an event to open a new public sculpture at Angmering Community Centre, designed by students from Angmering School, with experienced public artist, Tim Ward (Circling the Square).

Year 9 pupils at Angmering School worked in small groups to produce potential designs for a public sculpture, which were then put to the public, alongside a panel made up Parish councillors, and representatives from partners Arun DIstrict Council, local engineering firm S I Protech and Pallant House Gallery)  to vote for their favourite one. The winning creation was designed by students, Lucy, Ruby and Safiya, whose sculpture formed the basis of the final product, created by renowned public artist, Tim Ward.

The final sculpture is a bench with a plant bed at each end, with a rainbow arcing over and a dog sitting on the bench, holding a sunflower in its mouth. The design has meaning too – the rainbow and sunflower symbolise hope, whilst the dog means that no one who sits there will be lonely.

Programme Manager, Beccy East, said ‘It’s a beautiful and heartfelt design that genuinely reflects the feelings and experiences of young people from the village. It’s been a privilege to be able to work on using Section 106 funding to support developing a piece of art so embedded in its community.”

This sculpture is the first to be created in a planned series of new pieces of public art being commissioned by Artswork across the district of Arun, as part of the Arun Inspires programme, run in partnership with Arun District Council.

The next public sculpture will be in the village of Aldingbourne, and we are currently taking applications for this commission. See the description and apply here.
