In celebration of #LoveArtsAwardWeek2022, we talked to Artsworks Finance & Operations Administrator, Desiree Bratcher, about her experience achieving an Arts Award and how it’s helped her shape her career to become a valued member of the Artswork team.

Arts Award is a range of unique qualifications that supports anyone up to 25 to grow as artists and arts leaders, inspiring them to connect with and take part in the wider arts world through taking challenges in an art form – from fashion to digital art, pottery to poetry. Desiree joined Artswork in February 2017 (as part of the Creative Apprentice programme) as Operations and Programme Assistant, working alongside the Finance and Operations team.

Can you tell us a little about the Arts Award you achieved? What was the project, and what level were you working towards?

We were working towards Gold Arts Award, which is a Level 3 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). My Arts Award was a mixture of different things; professional artistic practice as well as practical learning. I started off looking at make up, starting with beauticians and ending in a Makeup and Prosthetics Workshop for Films with Katie Griffiths. I posted all my practice on Instagram to gauge feedback. I also did theatre and film workshops, learning about acting and behind the scene production with Millstream Productions, all before undertaking my professional development with Artswork, helping them put on and host events.

How has the Arts Award helped you move forward in your role at Artswork and how has it helped your career moving forward?

When I first started my Arts Award I didn’t really know what to expect, but as the project went on I developed many different skills which helped grow my confidence, including confidence to be flexible within my social and working environments. The experience of Arts Award helped me take on more responsibilities through differing roles across departments, including Finance and Operations. It has given me the push to put myself out there and be vulnerable to take criticism. Without this qualification I would not have developed this mindset.
