Representation in the Primary Arts Curriculum
In Aldingbourne, during 2022, acclaimed metalwork public artist Richard Janes was appointed to work with students across the community to co-design and create a new sculpture for the Parish to be placed outside the Aldingbourne Community Sports Centre.
The artist worked across 3 local schools to broaden the reach and impact of the project:
Students worked with Richard to explore the possibilities of public art and its uses in different places before digging in to research the history, both deeper and more recent, of their parish.
All three group came together to work at the Academy and create some of their key image ideas into clay, which was later cast into bronze and inset to the sculpture. Deepening the STEaM element of the project, secondary students also learned how to use CAD software to draw the designs used to laser cut shapes in the final piece
The sculpture was officially opened in October 2022 by Parish and District councillors, alongside live music by local students.
