Dr Helen Simons


Helen Simons is an internationally recognised evaluator, director of evaluation training and author. She is Professor Emiritus of  Education and Evaluation at the University of Southampton and an independent evaluation consultant incoporating the arts. She is an elected academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, past–president of the United Kingdom Evaluation Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Professor Simons has conducted numerous external evaluations  of innovatory programmes sponsored by both government and non-government agencies and directed numerous evaluation-training workshops both in this country and overseas.

Helen’s research in the field of evaluation over 30 years has focused on democratic processes, qualitative methodology (including narrative and case study) self-evaluation and ethics and she has published widely in these fields.

In 1999 she retrained at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education. From 2001-4 she was part of ‘Seizing The Fire’, a Collaborative Creative Arts network of professionals exploring the use of the arts for personal and professional growth. In 2003 and 2005, she conducted workshops on creative evaluation for artists in Scotland working in Galleries and Museums. Recent consultancies include advising on several projects using the arts in development and research projects.

Helen has always been a passionate follower of the arts and, following the retraining above, introduced the use of poetry, narrative, image, metaphor and movement into course developmentand evaluations. Currently researching the role of the  arts in evaluation methodology, she also finds time to explore her own creativity through music, poetry and dance, as well as yoga and meditation.
