Youth-led mural design for childrens cell

Artswork has secured funding from #BeeWell to enable children working with the YJS to work with a professional artist to make a cell at the Isle of Wight Courts used by children a less intimidating space for children to be, in line with Child First principles.

We know we can make this an impactful and successful project, having recently used the same model to create a mural for the ceiling of the cell at Newport Police Station where children are held.

The aims of the courts project are to support the YJS’s work reducing reoffending, by giving the children involved in the project an opportunity to ​‘give something back’ and be proud of their achievements, while at the same time learning new skills, acquiring digital badge qualifications and potentially improving employability. By creating a calming and ​‘friendly’ space, that feels less hostile, it will also support the vulnerable children going through the system – particularly those who are neurodivergent, again supporting objectives around rehabilitation and lack of criminalisation.

Please send a short (2p A4 maximum) expression of interest responding to the artist specification and a CV which can include up to 5 images or a website link.

Applications must be received by email to petarainford@​artswork.​org.​uk by 10:00 Tuesday 24 June 2025.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their ideas to the children, supported by the YJS and Artswork, on Tuesday 1 July 4 – 6pm.
