Portsmouth youth venue

Playland is a youth-led creative venue that provides Portsmouth’s young people with a safe place to express themselves, and build creative skills and experience.

About the project

We have joined forces with Portsmouth Creates to transform the previously vacant amusement arcade, Playland, located in the heart of Portsmouth’s Commercial Road into a vibrant, youth-led creative community venue. Local young people have told us that they don’t feel they have enough safe spaces in Portsmouth where they feel they belong. Learning to develop and run this new venue will achieve that, as well as driving skills development and career pathways into the creative industries.

  • 7 people stand outside Playland with the 'Playland' sign in view
  • 3 people stand inside Playland building, 1 has a play land t shirt on.
  • 3 people work on Playland garden and on the wall they have used a jet wash to write 'Playland' on a muddy wall.

This new creative hub represents a real opportunity for young people in Portsmouth to take the lead in shaping their future. The space, which is currently a blank canvas, will be developed and run by young people for young people. It will be exciting to see what their ideas are and what activities they decide are relevant for them and their peers.

How can I get involved?

We are in the process of reimagining Playland, an abandoned arcade, as a new youth-led creative space for under 30’s in Portsmouth. The way that Playland will look and run is all down to you though – the under 30’s the venue is for!

Though we’re only a couple of month’s into the space starting to open its doors (on a limited basis for now), we’re so excited about the possibility of what Playland will become, but it’s all shaped by under 30’s and what YOU want this space to be.

So come along to one of our drop in events to find out more and meet other under 30’s in Portsmouth who are interested in creativity in some shape or form.

Not sure? Email us and ask us anything you like – we’re always happy to help.

Project partners

We’re working with Portsmouth Creates on this project and The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner have pledged £25k to support activity at Playland.
