Chips the Seagull
Chips the Seagull was crafted into life by attendees at Artswork’s free drop-in workshop in Littlehampton, facilitated by local environmental artists, Two Circles Design. Taking place at the Manor House rather than on the High Street after a last minute weather warning, the workshop was part of a wider event celebrating the completion of the Littlehampton Town Centre Public Realm Improvements project.
Children and young people were invited to help build the seagull out of willow, guided by Mark and Rebecca of Two Circles Design, as well as star-shaped willow wands to take home. We were delighted that the young people who suggested creating a giant seagull for the town in a previous consultation also attended this workshop and were able to contribute to making it a reality!
Alongside the creative workshop, Creative Producer for Arun Beccy East, and Creative Producer Apprentice Lucy engaged participants in conversations around their local area, inviting them to contribute to a board asking about the main issues that affect young people in Littlehampton, and what ideas they have for creative projects in the area. Ideas shared will feed into the next phase of the Young Cultural Changemakers programme in Arun.
At the end of the event the seagull was named ‘Chips’ after a lively vote on names suggested by workshop participants! Chips will be on Littlehampton High Street during the festive season – watch this space for photos!
