The Isle of Wight Cultural Education Partnership has launched Lift the Lid on Island Culture, a programme that aims to reignite a sense of pride and passion for cultural heritage on the Isle of Wight. The commissioning programme will result in offsite artworks in four areas – Pan/Newport, East Cowes, Freshwater and Ventnor, and a schools response exhibition at Quay Arts.

Showcasing music, visual arts and dance, the programme will emphasise the diversity of cultural experiences on the Island and encourage wide participation, as well as outreach to new audiences and the opportunity for people to experience site-specific commissioned work from established contemporary artists and performers.

Coinciding with the European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018 and the Year of the Biosphere in 2019, Lift the Lid on Island Culture will entice new and existing audiences through related workshops, talks, expos and events and provide new opportunities for and by young people across the Island.

The programme will ultimately affect the direction of travel for the Island’s cultural sector. Members of the Cultural Education Partnership are working together to ensure future collaboration and joined-up thinking across the Isle of Wight, and are building a strong case for arts and heritage support from future funders too. Current support for the work comes from Arts Council England, Artswork, LA Section 106, Education & Skills Funding Agency, IW Area of Outstanding Beauty, and the Mike Howley Trust.
