Using Arts Award to Support Transition

Transition, whether from infant to junior, primary to secondary, or even just the step up to a new year group can be both exciting and challenging. It can also be hard to find the time to enable children and young people to reflect on their feelings about leaving and anticipation of all that awaits them after the summer. The arts offer a route to achieving this and by linking it to an Arts Award, children can also gain an Award.

The Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes (BOBMK) Primary Creativity Champions have created an Arts Award Explore programme that supports Year 6 pupils to reflect on their experiences of the arts at primary school, identifying and celebrating the skills they have learned and helping them to articulate what they are looking forward to at secondary school. The activities encourage reflection, exploration through the music of Gershwin and the folk art of Heather Galler and move their thoughts to the possibilities of careers in the arts through finding out more about the work of The Royal Opera House.

The BOBMK Primary Creativity Champions also facilitated a CPDL session around Arts Award in Primary Schools. View the resources from this session here.

The resources include a PowerPoint providing a detailed series of activities each linked to Explore sections and a pupil booklet that can be used physically or digitally.
