Our work in Arun, empowering young people to lead and make change in their communities through creativity.

What impact have Changemakers in Arun made so far?

They created 5 new short films exploring the impact of the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project on their local coast

Over 700 primary children from Littlehampton and Rustington Schools discovered new film making techniques to make 5 unique short films designed to inspire families about the work of the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project.

  • Whole school of primary pupils on playground facing the camera with protest banners
  • Group of primary school children sat on beach in winter coats watching a workshop facilitator demonstration
  • Young boy creating a sea life themed animation using equipment

I would like to tell the people in charge of my community  how important it is to save our ocean and not disturb any sea life and let everything live naturally in the ocean. And also try to inspire them to do any tiny little jobs - if loads of people do loads little things it can change the world massively.

They designed 3 new public art pieces transforming the exterior spaces of The Angmering School

Young people who use the Lavinia Norfolk Centre, a Specialist Support Facility for students with a physical or sensory impairment worked with local artists Two Circles Design to create inspirational new public art pieces that reflect their experiences and priorities.

  • Diverse group of school children with physical disabilities celebrate in front of woven egg artwork holding ceramic swallows
  • Circular golden artwork decorated with painted pictures including a sun, butterfly, basketball, hands spelling out BSL letters and more. On wall.
  • Flock of brightly coloured ceramic swallows arranged in a large spiral flight pattern, spanning multi story wall

They created a walking art trail encouraging physical activity and celebrating different and acceptance around the estates of Bognor Regis

Over 30 young people who are part of Bognor Youth & Community Centre created art in diverse forms, with local artist Tricia Johnson, to animate their local area.

  • Group of people including young people holding certificates pointing up at artwork on a lamppost
  • Young girl screen printing assisted by adult
  • Man teaching young boy guitar
  • Woman helping young girl to bake, boy using mixing bowl
  • Young girl using drum kit
  • Young girl standing in front of sound equipment

They designed an inclusive and accessible Youth Community Garden in Bognor Regis

This project was in response to feedback from their community about a need for projects that can support local young people’s wellbeing. The Changemakers wanted to combat local issues, with a particular focus on combatting feelings of isolation, excessive screen use, and stereotyping of young people in public spaces

  • Young student speaking into a microphone to members of the public attending a community garden launch event
  • A group of 12 young people stood with an artist and the local town mayor in front of a mosaic mural they helped design and create for a community garden
  • Young person taking a photo using their smartphone of a mosaic mural they helped to design and create for a community garden

I love it so much and I'm excited to see it grow and help younger people feel better about themselves.

They organised a celebration event for the opening of the new K2 Community Centre in Littlehampton

The young people programmed a diverse range of creative activities that young people of all ages could enjoy in their new community space.

  • A group of young people, an artist and local town councillors stood in front of a new community centre they helped open together
  • An adult holding a young persons arms to balance them on a skateboard whilst they learn how to skate
  • A facilitator teaching a small group of young people and adults some street dance moves

They presented a thought-provoking art exhibition and unveiled a mural at Littlehampton railway station

The artworks in the exhibition named Now You See Me’ explored feelings about their town, themselves and their experiences with youth violence. Additionally, the vibrant mural outside the station aims to improve and brighten perceptions about the town.

  • A large spraypainted, colourful street art mural outside of Littlehampton train station that says "Littlehampton" in a street art font
  • Two framed A2 digital artworks exhibited in Littlehampton station, one of the artworks has text on it that says "Life is more about choice than chance"
  • Young person smiling whilst cutting the ribbon for a large mural launch at Littlehampton train station

I’ve been working in Arun since 2019 with stakeholders from schools to businesses, artists, health workers, councillors and teachers. There’s a wealth of creativity to be explored locally, and lots of inspiration from the beautiful coastal and river scenery, to the sweep of the South Downs.
