3D Ceramic Mural Gosport
Secondary school students in Gosport created a 3D ceramic mural highlighting threat to local marine habitats after learning about pollution.
In 2024, students from Bridgemary School co-created a ‘3‑D mural’ with ceramicist Karen Townsend of Misty Ceramics that highlights threats to local marine habitats. The final piece is made up of multiple ceramic forms made by the children, and was inspired by the work of artist and ocean advocate Courtney Mattison. The students involved valued the creative freedom they had on this project, and their learning about marine pollution.

I have learnt a lot about what pollutes the sea. Before this, I would have thought a paper straw didn’t matter, but we researched it and found out that paper straws were a major source of pollution - because they still have plastic in them.
This group particularly valued the greater freedom working with a professional creative, outside the curriculum, gave them.
I really like that we have been able to personalise everything and make our own decisions about what we do.
We have much more creative freedom… We don’t usually have creative freedom in art classes, we just have to do what the art teacher says.
Staff also observed that they had learnt new techniques and skills that they will be able to deploy in class.
