Young Cultural Changemakers Dover

EKC Dover College Junk Band

Young people from EKC Dover College worked alongside local artists and musicians to create a Junk Band using recycled and found materials.

As part of the Reawakening the Maison Dieu’ project, we worked with young people from EKC Dover College to create a Junk Band named Scrap Yard’ using found materials (including donations from the Maison Dieu’s renovations) with support from local artists Tim Smithen and Nastia Nizalova and musicians Siemy and CJ.

A pile of instruments made from recycled materials as part of a 'Junk Band'. The surfaces of drums, shakers, and cymbals have been covered in colourful doodles by young people.

Throughout the project, the young people participated in DJing workshops that sparked enthusiasm and a desire for more creative opportunities, as well as the importance of accessible artistic spaces in Dover. Following this, a new music group was formed that aimed to provide a platform for young musicians to collaborate and develop their skills. Some of them also expressed an interest in organising future events like festivals.

Utilising the skills they had learnt, the young people recorded a piece of music that was then projected during Dover at Night, where they also held a workshop to teach members of the public how to use the instruments.
