Project 39

Project 39 is a bold youth art takeover of the 36-metre pedestrian subway under Hotham Way in Bognor Regis.

Working in partnership with 39 Youth Club and West Sussex Youth Justice Service, the project invited local young people aged 1018 to come together to plan a creative transformation of this heavily used but unloved space. A core group of 32 young people worked with commissioned artist Emma Ghafur to develop the theme for the work (‘I LOVE Bognor’) which led to 13 free design workshops at local primary and secondary schools to generate work.

Over 300 drawings were submitted to the project, curated by the young people’s group into designs for vibrant vinyl prints which will be installed as an inspiring and long lasting transformation of the space. Alongside this, young people selected and commissioned street artist ALEC LDN to produce dynamic murals that reflect and celebrate their community.

Our young cultural changemakers in Bognor have worked to explore the impacts of public art, design principles and techniques and making their own murals, to deliver a project that transforms this key pedestrian route across the town into a vibrant, inspiring and safer space. By participating in the project, they have earned digital badge qualifications in skills such as Communication, Teamwork and Using Your Voice as well as nationally accredited Arts Awards.

Our credited young artists whose work appears in the tunnel are:
