Youth Trust mental health charity reception redesign
Members of the Island Youth Mental Health Taskforce worked with a local artist to transform the reception area at a local mental health charity into a more welcoming and nurturing space for young people.
In partnership with the Youth Trust and in collaboration with artist Laura Hathaway who was chosen by the group, members of the Island Youth Mental Health Taskforce worked to transform the reception area at Youth Trust House into a more welcoming and nurturing space for young people. The Taskforce shared how the space felt ‘intimidating’ ‘overwhelming’ and ‘sterile’, and wanted the new design to have a calming, relaxed atmosphere.
“Coming into a space whether as a newcomer, or to a space you know well, can be really tough for a young person. Involving young people in the creation of their space is so important not only for those youngsters who are used to being here, but particularly for young people who may be stepping through the door for the first time.”
The young people were involved in every aspect of the design process, from choosing the colour palette, to creating bespoke artworks, to painting the walls.
The Youth Trust is an organisation for young people, so it makes sense to give them a voice and decisions in how it looks.
Impact
The young people on the Taskforce told us that involvement in the project had supported their own mental wellbeing, as well as creating a space that will support the wellbeing of service users.
100% of participants said they felt their opinions had been listened to and that the project made them feel proud
83% felt they had learnt new skills and said that involvement in the project had increased their confidence
Members of the Island Youth Mental Health Taskforce reflected on the benefits of being part of the project:
“I come to clear my mind and for relaxation. The whole experience has been very nice and therapeutic. I’ve always volunteered at Youth Trust and would love to help like they helped me.”
“It is nice to be a part of a project to redesign a space for young people to feel safe and comfortable in.”
