Understanding Conflict & How to Resolve It
Tuesday 2 June, 10.00–3.00 (with a one-hour lunch break) | Online via Zoom | £115
Conflict is a natural part of working with people, but how we understand and respond to it makes a significant difference to whether teams feel safe, connected and able to work well together.
This practical, insight-led course introduces a range of evidence-informed conflict resolution models and translates them into accessible tools for managers, facilitators and anyone supporting others through difficult situations. This includes those working in creative, cultural and heritage organisations, where collaboration, freelance working and complex team dynamics are common. The emphasis throughout is on psychological safety, emotional intelligence and relational approaches that strengthen, rather than strain, working relationships.
Through interactive activities, reflective discussion and real-world scenarios, participants explore what sits beneath conflict (such as emotional triggers, communication patterns, unmet needs, power and structural tensions), and develop greater confidence in navigating challenging moments with clarity, empathy and professionalism.
This course blends theory with practical application, supporting participants to understand conflict dynamics, choose appropriate responses, and work constructively through tension.
In this course, you will:
- Explore what conflict is (and isn’t) and why it arises in teams
- Recognise different conflict styles and how context influences behaviour
- Diagnose the root causes of conflict using structured, practical models
- Develop approaches to de-escalation and reframing
- Learn to facilitate conversations that reduce defensiveness and increase clarity
- Build confidence in responding with empathy, emotional intelligence and calm authority
Key models and approaches explored include:
- Thomas–Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI)
- Interest-Based Relational Approach
- Circle of Conflict model
- Interest-Based Negotiation (Harvard model)
- GROW model for conflict coaching
- Emotional intelligence and the SCARF model
Participants will consider how to use these models flexibly, choosing the most effective approach depending on the situation, the people involved and the wider context.
