Young Cultural Changemakers Dover

Kent Mining Museum & Goodwin Academy Mural

Students from Goodwin Academy worked with local artists to design a mural reflecting Dover’s mining history.

  • Two young people smiling as they stand in front of the newly completed mural that they had designed and created
  • Three young people painting a mural designed to represent Dover's mining history with green and blue paint
  • A section of a mural representing Dover's mining history. Painted in this section is a man wearing a flat cap, speaking into a megaphone, as well as multiple, colourful picket sign shapes.
  • A section of a mural designed to represent Dover's mining history. The text painted onto the wall reads "Welcome to Kent Mining Museum Betteshanger"

We worked with students from Goodwin Academy, partnered with Kent Mining Museum and artists Sam Giles, Jack Cant, and Rainna Erbas to design a mural reflecting Dover’s mining history. This project was inspired by conversations with young people throughout the year, during which they expressed interest in access to outdoor public spaces, transport, and visiting historical sites.

The students worked on the murals design with Sam Giles and Jack Cant, ensuring that it represented young people’s thoughts about Dover District’s Mining history. Some of the young people involved even had relatives who worked at the mines.

A handmade ceramic mug made using charcoal-based clay. It has a small ceramic pickaxe and rocks attached to the inside and bottom of the mug to represent Dover's mining history.

Alongside supporting the painting of the mural, the young people also tried out a variety of different design processes throughout the project including vinyl heat press, zine making, collage, and creating mining-inspired ceramics using charcoal-based clay with Rainna Erbas.
