An exhibition about hope, about new perspectives, and new beginnings. It is about challenging the way children are seen and how they see the world.

Perspectives’ was an exhibition of photographs at Quay Arts in Newport and an accompanying book, created by young people supported by the Isle of Wight Youth Justice Service (YJS). They worked with multidisciplinary artist Trudie Wilson in Sandown, challenging stereotypes and finding beauty in unexpected places.

The project used photography to challenge the way young people are seen, and the way they see others, to help improve community connection and reduce youth crime, and was part of a wider crime reduction project funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner.

Through a series of photographic workshops exploring different themes, techniques and processes, the children were encouraged to look at familiar places in different ways and encourage other young people to do the same. Some images were taken in collaboration with National Landscapes as part of their Creative Landscapes project.

The exhibition and book were both extremely well received at the private view attended by local decision-makers, including Children’s Services and the Police, as well as the participants, friends and family.

A brilliant example of the potential of young people and the power of different organisations coming together with a shared purpose.

I have worked in youth justice for ten years and this is one of the most fulfilling projects I have ever worked on! The children have done fantastic!
